Data & Privacy
Your data is stored locally in your browser using IndexedDB.
IndexedDB is a browser-based database system that stores data directly on your device. This means:
- â Your data never leaves your computer/device
- â No servers storing your information
- â Complete privacy and control
- â Works without internet after initial load
- â ī¸ Data is specific to the browser and device you're using
IndexedDB is a standard web technology supported by all modern browsers. It can store text, numbers, files, and structured data efficiently.
Yes! Your data is completely private and secure.
Since ShareHive stores everything locally in your browser:
- â No data sent to any servers
- â No analytics or tracking
- â No third-party access
- â No data collection of any kind
- â You have full control
For maximum security, regularly export your data and encrypt the backup files if they contain sensitive information.
Backing up your data is simple and highly recommended!
Steps to backup:
- Go to "âī¸ Settings" in the sidebar
- Find the "Export Data" or "Backup" section
- Click "Export" or "Download Backup"
- Save the JSON file to a safe location
- Store backups in multiple places (cloud, external drive, email)
Browser data can be lost if you clear cache, uninstall your browser, or switch devices. Create backups weekly or after important updates!
Restoring your data is straightforward:
- Go to "âī¸ Settings"
- Look for "Import Data" or "Restore" option
- Click "Import" or "Choose File"
- Select your backup JSON file
- Confirm the import
- Refresh the page to see your restored data
Importing data may overwrite existing data. If you have current data you want to keep, export it first before importing!
Clearing browser data will delete all your ShareHive data!
If you clear your browser's cache, cookies, or site data, IndexedDB will also be cleared, resulting in permanent data loss.
This data cannot be recovered unless you have a backup file. Always export your data before clearing browser storage!
Situations that cause data loss:
- Manually clearing browser cache/cookies/site data
- Using browser "Reset" or "Clean" features
- Uninstalling and reinstalling the browser
- Using incognito/private browsing mode
- Browser storage quota exceeded
Currently, automatic sync is not available, but you can sync manually.
Manual sync process:
- On Device A: Export your data
- Transfer the backup file to Device B (email, cloud, USB)
- On Device B: Import the backup file
- Repeat whenever you need to sync
Cloud synchronization is being considered for future updates, which would allow automatic sync across all your devices!
Storage limits depend on your browser, but typically:
- Most browsers allow 50-100MB for IndexedDB
- Some browsers allow up to 1-2GB with user permission
- Chrome and Firefox tend to offer more storage
- Mobile browsers usually have smaller limits
Avoid uploading very large files. Use ShareHive for text data and small-to-medium files. Store large files externally and keep links in ShareHive.
No. ShareHive does not track, collect, or analyze your activity.
We believe in complete privacy:
- â No analytics
- â No tracking cookies
- â No usage statistics collection
- â No data sent to servers
- â No third-party scripts
Everything you do in ShareHive stays on your device.
Currently, there is no built-in password protection.
However, your data is protected by your device's security:
- Only accessible through your device and browser
- Protected by your device password/PIN
- Browser profiles keep data separate
For sensitive data, consider encrypting your backup files or using a password-protected browser profile.
Password protection and encryption features are being considered for future updates.
No, data is browser-specific.
Each browser maintains its own IndexedDB storage. Data in Chrome won't appear in Firefox, even on the same device.
To use ShareHive across browsers:
- Export data from Browser A
- Open ShareHive in Browser B
- Import the exported data

Troubleshooting
Common causes of data loss:
- Browser cache/data was cleared
- Using incognito/private mode
- Browser was uninstalled
- Switched to a different browser
- Storage quota exceeded
Unfortunately, if IndexedDB data is deleted, it cannot be recovered unless you have a backup file. This is why regular exports are crucial!
Prevention:
- Export data weekly as backup
- Store backups in multiple locations
- Avoid using incognito mode
- Don't clear site data
Try these solutions:
- Delete old, unused data
- Remove large uploaded files
- Clear browser cache (not site data!)
- Close unnecessary browser tabs
- Update to latest browser version
- Try a different browser
- Restart your browser
Large files and thousands of items can slow down ShareHive. Archive old data regularly and avoid storing very large files.
Troubleshooting steps:
- Refresh the page (F5 or Ctrl+R)
- Clear browser cache
- Check if JavaScript is enabled
- Try a different browser
- Disable browser extensions temporarily
- Check browser console for errors (F12)
Please report the issue on our Bug Report page with details about your browser and the problem.
This means your browser's storage limit is full.
Solutions:
- Delete unnecessary data and files
- Remove large uploaded files
- Export and archive old data
- Use cloud storage for large files (keep links in ShareHive)
- Clear old completed tasks and expired items
Most browsers limit IndexedDB to 50-100MB. Be selective about what you store in ShareHive!
No, deleted items cannot be recovered unless you have a backup.
ShareHive doesn't have a trash/recycle bin feature currently. When you delete something, it's permanently removed.
Export your data regularly. If you accidentally delete something important, you can restore it from your latest backup!
A trash/undo feature is being considered for future updates to prevent accidental deletions.
Improve search results:
- Try different keywords or phrases
- Check spelling
- Use partial words (search "java" for "javascript")
- Search in the specific feature (Notes, Bookmarks, etc.)
- Make sure the item actually exists
When creating items, use descriptive titles and detailed descriptions. This makes them much easier to find later!
Mobile optimization tips:
- Use landscape mode for better visibility
- Use latest mobile browser version
- Close other apps to free memory
- Some complex features work better on desktop
ShareHive is primarily optimized for desktop use, though most features work on mobile. For the best experience with complex features like Projects or Wiki, use a desktop browser.
Possible restrictions:
- Network firewall blocking the site
- Corporate security policies
- Browser restrictions on work/school devices
Workarounds:
- Use your personal mobile device
- Access during breaks on personal hotspot
- Export data and use locally
- Contact IT department for access
ShareHive uses your device's time settings.
If dates or timestamps are incorrect:
- Check your device's date and time settings
- Ensure timezone is set correctly
- Enable automatic time/timezone if available
- Restart your browser after changing time settings
Dark mode preference is saved in localStorage.
If it's not saving:
- Check if you're using incognito/private mode (settings don't persist)
- Ensure cookies/localStorage is enabled
- Try clearing cache and setting preference again
- Check browser privacy settings
Common export/import issues:
Export problems:
- Check if downloads are blocked in browser
- Try a different browser
- Ensure you have enough storage space
Import problems:
- Make sure you're selecting a valid JSON file
- Check file isn't corrupted
- Ensure file was exported from ShareHive
- Try importing on a fresh ShareHive instance
Import only works with JSON files exported from ShareHive. Other file formats won't work!
